Chapter 13

Frank made good time and arrived in Darwin just after four. It had been several years since he’d been to the northern capital, and he was surprised by how modern it had become. He was staying at the Hotel Tropicana on the waterfront, and when he pulled into the entrance, he couldn’t believe it was the same place he’d stayed at last time he’d been in town. He vaguely remembered newspaper articles mentioning a billion-dollar project to revitalise the Stokes Hill Wharf area, including the Hotel Tropicana, but he could barely believe his eyes. Instead of an older style hotel with brown brick and old-fashioned arches, in its place stood a building with marble tiles, huge expanses of glass that made it look and feel spacious, and it had a tropical rainforest in the entry.

Back when he was a kid, the wharf was a popular place to explore, but as he’d driven through, he’d noticed the changes. Gone were the fish shacks and shanties and small mum and dad restaurants that had bordered the pier. Now, in their place was a huge convention centre that played host to concerts, plays, and numerous other entertainment acts. Grand hotels, including the Hotel Tropicana, dotted the waterfront and there were not one, but a host of five-star restaurants and shopping areas as well. It was quite a departure from the quiet simple life he lived in Goddard Downs.

He checked into his suite without much ado, although his mouth dropped at the size of his room. He hadn’t given it much thought when the concierge at the front desk had told him they’d upgraded him to a suite free of charge. He figured that meant he had a little pull-out couch in the room, but this was something straight out of one of those fancy magazines.

The sitting area was as big as his bedroom back home. An elegant rattan sofa with large, colourful cushions faced a wall-mounted flat screen television and looked like an inviting spot to rest his weary body. And there were not one, but two bedrooms to choose from, both with queen sized beds and bathrooms and balconies with views over the harbour. It was a bit extravagant for his tastes, but he wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He made a mental note to thank Henry, the concierge, for his thoughtful gesture after he freshened up.

He felt better after a shower, but he was a little restless so he decided to take a stroll along the boardwalk alongside the waterfront before dinner. Stopping by the front desk, he thanked Henry for the upgrade and also asked him for recommendations for dinner.

“Are you planning on dining alone, or with somebody?” Henry asked.

Frank was about to answer ‘alone’ when he thought of Maggie. It was short notice, especially when he hadn’t even told her he was in town, but perhaps, just perhaps, she’d join him for dinner. The thought made his heart beat erratically. He drew in a slow breath and asked for recommendations for two.
